Vietnam’s two-way trade in June was up 3.21 percent over May.

All-in-all Vietnam clocked-up just under US$56 billion in two-way trade for the month with foreign direct invested enterprises accounting for a little over two-thirds.

Vietnam’s import and export data for March has been released by Vietnam Customs. Here’s how Vietnam is tracking in terms of trade in 2023.

Vietnam’s two-way trade in March was up 18 percent over February. In total, Vietnam exported about US$29.7 billion worth of goods and imported US$28.3 billion totalling US$58 billion in two-way trade.

Foreign direct invested enterprises accounted for about US$39.6 billion worth of two-way trade.

The bulk of Vietnam’s exports in March went to the United States. This is almost double its next biggest export market, China. It is also more than triple third place, the Republic of Korea.

Vietnam’s import and export data for February has been released by Vietnam Customs. Here’s how Vietnam is tracking in terms of trade in 2023 so far.

Vietnam’s two-way trade in February was up almost US$3 billion over January despite February being a slightly shorter month.

All-in-all Vietnam clocked-up over US$46 billion in two-way trade for the month with foreign direct invested enterprises accounting for a little over two-thirds.

What were Vietnam’s main imports?

In February, Vietnam’s top three imports were: computers, electronic products, spare parts and components; machinery, equipment, tools, and instruments; and other products. These three imports set Vietnam back a collective US$10.2 billion. This was slightly down on January’s figure of US$10.5 billion for the same three export categories.

Where did Vietnam’s exports go?

The bulk of Vietnam’s exports in February went to the United States. This is almost double its next biggest export market, China. It is also more than triple third place, the Republic of Korea.

January 2023

Vietnam’s total import-export turnover in January was US$46.5 billion down from US$56.3 billion in December. This may have been partly due to the week-long Lunar New Year holiday. There may also be some carry-over from December in which manufacturing orders were down due to greater global challenges (See also: Vietnamese Garment Makers Hit Snag).

What were Vietnam’s main imports?

In January, Vietnam’s top three imports were: computers, electronic products, spare parts and components; machinery, equipment, tools, and instruments; and other products. These three imports set Vietnam back a collective US$10.5 billion. This was about a quarter of Vietnam’s exports by value.

Vietnam imported goods from all over the world in January. Asia was its biggest supplier with just over US$19 billion in goods imported. The lion’s share of those imports came from China followed by South Korea.

WFS to handle China Cargo’s new Miami service next year December 15, 2023 by Payload Asia China Cargo Airlines has extended a new handling contract to SATS Group member, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), in North America with the launch of three weekly flights to Miami from Shanghai Pudong starting January next year. This marks the first time that a Chinese carrier to commenced services in Miami. WFS expects to handle various shipments coming from China, including high volumes of e-commerce traffic, perishables, seafood, and general cargo. The two have been working together for 25 years, and WFS has supported China Cargo’s growth in Los Angeles since 2006. It now handles 18 freighter services a week for China Cargo in LAX. The airline also partnered with WFS again in November 2022 when it commenced all-cargo services to New York JFK, now served by seven freighter flights per week. The handling partnership also extends to Seattle, a technical stop for China Cargo flights. WFS has provided ground handling for more than 20 flights between Pudong and Seattle every week for the previous 10 years, as well as an extra 30 to 50 charter services annually during the peak season for cherry exports. “WFS is proud to be a trusted and growing partner of China Cargo Airlines, a testament to the reliability of our freighter and cargo handling services in North America,” said Jose Canales, senior vice president, of commercial & business development, Americas, at WFS. “As the airline’s flight frequencies and network expand, we are confident that our collaboration will lead to further growth prospects in the future,” added Canales.

Vietnam logistics speeds up post-pandemic

Logistics companies are posting surging profits as transportation demand booms post-pandemic, but industry insiders expect further use of automation to reduce costs. PetroVietnam Transportation posted a post-tax profit surge of 72% year-on-year to VND1.04 trillion ($41.89 million) in the first nine months. Hai An Transport & Stevedoring recorded a profit jump of 1.5 times in the period to VND270 billion. Ship operator Vinalines’ profit increased by 30% to VND2.77 trillion, hitting its target for the year three months in advance. Warehouses in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in the first nine months posted an occupancy rate of over 90%, according to property data provider Cushman & Wakefield. It forecast that this rate could rise up to 100% in December thanks to the end-of-year shopping season. Vietnam’s logistics market was ranked 11th out of the 50 emerging markets globally this year thanks to technology adoption among service providers and their customers, according to supply chain service provider Agility. Vu Duc Thinh, CEO of Lazada Logistics Vietnam, has seen demand for storage rising in recent months. The company has been forcing itself to digitally transform as it records hundreds of thousands of orders a day, he said. It is set to launch a sorting center to maximize operations and reduce the number of workers. E-commerce site Tiki has been using robots in sorting since the end of last year, while delivery companies like DHL and Viettel Post have also been adopting new technology to cut costs. Chen HongMing, CEO of logistics firm GRS Global, said that developed countries use automation to reduce expenses by half of those in Vietnam. An e-commerce fulfillment center in China in previous years needed 4,000 workers to sort and pack items, but last year it started using robots and now only needed 1,000 to operate the center, he said. This also reduces delivery time by six hours, and if Vietnamese companies can adopt automation in logistics, the country will emerge as a spotlight for investors in Asia, he added. Another challenge for Vietnamese companies is that transport infrastructure including airports, seaports, and warehouses are not up to par with global standards, Chen said. But the country has great potential, as transportation is now seeing a lot of competition, including from famous global companies. “Vietnam’s GDP is set to expand by 8% annually in the next 10 years, therefore its logistics share will grow.” The country’s logistics sector is set to grow 15-20% annually by 2025 when it will reach $80 billion, according to the Vietnam Industry Research and Consultancy.

Industrial land demand, rents jump in attractive Việt Nam

HCM CITY — Industrial land rents are expected to increase by up to 10 per cent in the next two years in both the north and south thanks to growing demand from various industries, experts have said. Despite facing difficulties due to the economic slowdown, many investors have announced tentative plans to expand their business and investment. The latest quarterly Business Confidence Index from the European Chamber of Commerce Việt Nam’s (EuroCham) shows Việt Nam’s global investment appeal remains strong. A notable 63 per cent of surveyed businesses positioned Việt Nam within their top 10 FDI destinations, EuroCham said. VinaCapital’s ongoing annual investors’ conference also clearly indicates the attractiveness of the Vietnamese market with nearly 100 delegates from around the world attending it. Don Lam, CEO and founding partner of VinaCapital Group, said: “It’s been three years since we were last able to host an in-person investor conference, and as we all know, the world has changed greatly since then. “But one thing that hasn’t changed is Việt Nam’s attractiveness for investment. Few countries have emerged from the global pandemic as strong as Việt Nam has, and we are excited for our guests to see and hear that the opportunities for investing here are as abundant as ever.” Recently UK company Essentra Components announced plans to invest in Việt Nam. Scott Fawcett, its CEO, said: “With more manufacturers moving into new territories as they look to diversify and become less reliant on one area, they need partners that can move with them and continue to offer the same level of service they are accustomed to. “Our expansion into Việt Nam is a solution to that very problem and will give our customers the reassurance that service can continue without interruption.” The company said with its advantageous geographical position and 17 free trade agreements with countries in Europe and the Americas, Việt Nam has become a strategic destination in the global supply chain, particularly in the manufacturing and industrial component sectors. Major corporations such as Apple and LEGO have already begun building primary production facilities in Việt Nam at a cost of billions of dollars. Công Thương newspaper (Vietnam Economic News) quoted Nguyễn Văn Dòng, chairman of the Việt Nam Printing Association, as saying Việt Nam is an attractive destination for foreign investors, and many delegations from China and Thailand have been visiting to explore investment opportunities. Industrial property market With international investors flocking to the country, the demand for industrial land has been rising. A recent report by property consultancy CBRE said that in the first nine months of 2023 investors from China, Viet Nam, Japan, the US, and the European Union actively looked for industrial land, warehouses, and factories, and accounted for 70-80 percent of the inquiries it got. With Việt Nam continuing to strengthen cooperation with comprehensive strategic partners such as the US, South Korea, and China in recent times, investors from these countries were expected to lead the demand for industrial real estate, it said. The occupancy rate at industrial parks in the south was 81.9 percent as of the end of the third quarter, it said. There were significant transactions by Chinese and Japanese enterprises in industries such as chemicals, plastics, rubber, and electronics. In the north, the occupancy rate was marginally down from the end of the second quarter to 80.2 percent in the third quarter of 2023 though up 0.4 percentage points year-on-year. It explained that this was because new industrial parks opened in Bắc Ninh and Hưng Yên provinces, causing supply to soar. The market saw large transactions by businesses in plastics, textiles, and contact lenses, it said. The industrial land absorption rate was up 18 percent at 700ha. Thanh Phạm, associate director, of research and consulting, at CBRE Vietnam, said: “The net absorption for the country as a whole is expected to be higher in 2023, showing demand is recovering. We see positive performance, especially in industrial land and ready-built factory segments.” Demand for ready-built factories was mainly from industries such as garment, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, she said. Demand for warehouse leases saw an impressive recovery from the previous quarter, with large transactions carried out by logistics enterprises, she said. Speaking about future trends, she expected developers and enterprises to focus on sustainable development and technology use. “Green criteria are gradually becoming among the important ones in building factories and warehouses and manufacturing, spurring the development of green industrial parks.” In the next two years, industrial land rents are expected to increase by 6-10 percent a year in both the north and south, according to CBRE. BRUSSELS – Logistics firms in Việt Nam need to make full use of their potential and existing advantages to develop the sector, experts said at the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations World Congress (FWC) on Tuesday. Stéphane Graber, general director of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA), said Việt Nam has the potential to become a logistic hub, as demonstrated by having a strategic geographical location and diversified means of transportation, especially waterway transportation. “Việt Nam has been applying best practices in logistics, and it is necessary for it to receive sufficient training and enhance internal growth,” he said, adding that the FIATA would work with the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA) to provide logistics training in the near future. Graber also said Việt Nam has many advantages in developing logistics, notably through growth in production and manufacturing post-pandemic. “A global transition in manufacturing has made foreign businesses relocate their factories in Việt Nam, which has contributed to the improvement of the country’s logistics sector,” said the general secretary of the VLA, Nguyễn Duy Minh. Free trade agreements with 16 countries like Japan, South Korea, and Australia and trade opportunities with the US have also set the stage for Vietnamese logistics to grow, Minh said. Governmental support in the sector has also enabled Việt Nam to bolster the overall logistics landscape, said Anis Khan, CEO of Intrapass GmbH (a Swiss logistics company). Minh said Vietnamese export service enterprises should also cooperate with Belgium to set up a Vietnamese logistics centre there, helping to reduce transportation costs for exports to the EU and assist transshipment to Africa. Efforts should also be made by the government to raise awareness in Vietnamese society about the importance of logistics, Minh suggested, citing the VLA’s success in bringing the FWC to Việt Nam. The FWC helps businesses connect with governmental and non-governmental organisations. Themed “The Climate Change of Logistics”, this year’s FWC discusses the current challenges, innovations, and developments of the changing global market, focusing on new trends in logistics and the education, compliance, diversity, and responsibility of logistics in adapting to climate change.
